Save time and renew your passport online

Senator Maria Byrne advises everyone to check their passport is in date well in advance of travel

With many Limerick City people planning trips abroad over the coming months, Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne is encouraging people to save time by renewing their passport online.

“Anybody planning a foreign holiday at this time of year needs to check their passport is in date well in advance of travel, the advice still remains to not to book a holiday unless your passport is in date and If you’re looking for your children, remember to check their passports too.

“Nobody wants to be caught out in the airport with a passport that has expired, and the last thing you need while planning your holiday is to be worrying about a passport application.

“Nearly all Irish citizens can apply for renewals online.  It is the quickest way to get an Irish passport.  .

“You can apply at www.dfa.ie/passportonline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no need for a paper application form, witnesses or printed photos.

Most applications have 5 simple steps as outlined below.

  1. Application received: We have received your Passport Online application. We cannot process it until you send us, by post, the required supporting documents.
  2. Alert: We have received your application. You must submit your supporting documents to proceed with the application.
  3. Processing application: We have received your supporting documents. We are now verifying these documents.
  4. Processing application: Your application is being processed.
  5. Printing: Your Passport book is being printed. Any documents submitted will be returned separately.

“Current average turnaround times for an simple online renewal application type is 10 Working Days.

“If you are not eligible to apply online and if you are travelling in more than three weeks you can use the Passport Express service operated in partnership with An Post.
