We must utilise Shannon Airport to combat the delays in Dublin Airport – Byrne

21st of April 2022

“We must utilise Shannon airport to combat the delays in Dublin Airport according to Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne

Over the last number of weeks passengers travelling from Dublin airport have experienced long delays at security due to staff shortages, Dublin Airport is still in the process of regrouping operations since the disruptions after Covid.

“There have been photos shared across social media to highlight the chaos in Dublin Airport, while other passengers have shared their swift journeys through security in Shannon airport & other regional airports, we must transfer certain flights to Shannon Airport  and other regional airports to ease the disruptions in Dublin airport.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton T.D., announced the allocation of almost €16.4 million in Exchequer funding to regional airports under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025.

Minister Naughton addedThe announcement represents Government’s commitment to continue to support Ireland’s regional airports to remain financially sustainable as they prepare for growth into the future. This capital funding will support a great number of safety and security related capital projects, ensuring that airports can continue to remain compliant with regulatory requirements in these areas.  I am pleased to announce also that, in line with the broadening of the scope of the Programme, a significant number of this year’s projects have a sustainability focus, facilitating the sustainable growth of the sector.”

“The Government investment of €4,347,750 in Shannon Airport has been welcomed along with the  funding to the other regional airports, this provides the opportunity to utilise these airports as alternative routes of travel than Dublin.

“It is vital that we encourage the use of Shannon Airport where possible to reduce the delays and support our regional airports. We have viable alternatives available other than Dublin and we must utilise them.
